The book should be a mandatory read for every woman, and if you only read one of the books in this post make it this one. Alisa has a wealth of knowledge and shares it in a way that is easy to understand. She teaches you how to “live in the flo” so that you are working with your body to support it instead of always trying to fight against it. She has a free app called “MyFLO” (for Apple devices at least, I’m not sure about android) that helps you track your period, symptoms and offers advice and tips.

Randi Epstein has written a fun, fast-paced medical detective story about the discovery of hormones and what they do in the body. We learn how these chemical signals regulate growth, weight, gender and sexuality, even the bonding of mother and infant. We learn what happens when there is too much of them – think of the fat lady and giant that were once paraded around at the Circus – or too little – the salt craving and exhaustion of Addison’s Disease that afflicted John F Kennedy.
A must-read for all women, Dr. Gottfried is brilliant, relatable and tells it like it is. Even women in their 20s can benefit from the wisdom here about how to listen to our bodies and address imbalances (stress, low sex drive, acne, etc) in a natural way without running straight to pills or prescriptions. What I love about this book is the way Gottfried absolves women of what many feel might be personal shortcomings or genetic life-sentences: Am I doomed to have low sex drive forever? Will I al ...more
After knowing "something" wasn't right in my body, and with all blood work for normal panels and the thyroid test showing normal, my only recourse was checking the hormones. My Gyn Dr is very open minded and he actually believed me when I said something's not right. I am 55, very athletic, not overweight, can work circles around most 22 year olds, and when I suddenly put on 8 lbs and gained 2 inches in my waist in spite of rigorous exercise and a 1400 cal diet, he said let's check the testosterone. We did, and I had NONE, zero, "unable to calculate". He was surprised I hadn't put on more weight and didn't feel really bad. Had I not been fighting "it" I would probably have put on 20 lbs!! Reading this book really explained what's going on in my body and I start on pellets in 2 weeks. It will take me 6-8 months to get back to where I was, but knowing I CAN go back is very reassuring and makes the wait worth it. If you are having any of the "usual" postmenopausal problems, I highly recommend having the testosterone checked, even if it means changing doctors!!
It is little-known that hormones play a crucial ongoing role in our most vital bodily functions. I see countless patients whose busy lives leave them feeling depleted, burnt out and looking for answers. They do not want an extreme approach – nor do they need one. They usually need a reset and to balance their hormones. This 4-week plan outlines nutritional and lifestyle changes to help get your life and your hormones back on track.
Estradiol is the predominant hormone of our youth. In the childbearing years, our ovaries produce mostly estradiol (80 percent) and the rest is equally divided between estriol and estrone. As we enter menopause, the ratio changes, and we produce predominantly estrone. Each of these estrogens is broken down, primarily through the liver, into other estrogens, and each has a role to play in our health and the diseases that affect us.

androgen Dihydrotestosterone DHT multiple AR 5-DHT or DHT is a male reproductive hormone that targets the prostate gland, bulbourethral gland, seminal vesicles, penis and scrotum and promotes growth/mitosis/cell maturation and differentiation. Testosterone is converted to 5-DHT by 5alpha-reductase, usually with in the target tissues of 5-DHT because of the need for high concentrations of 5-dht to produce the physiological effects.
If there’s a woman who’s satisfied with her weight and body firmness as she gets older, I haven’t met her. Yet testosterone can make an enormous and surprising difference in both. Take Mary, a thirty-nine-year-old stay-at-home mom and the wife of a construction manager. Her kids were in school, which left her time to enjoy going to the gym and playing tennis. Despite this active lifestyle and a slim body, Mary came to see me about how she could tighten her arms. She was fit, but unhappy that no matter how hard she worked on her arms she couldn’t firm them up. “I’ve stopped wearing sleeveless tops and dresses,” she told me. “I need laser treatment.”

Earlier this year in January (2012) I suffered from incurable, painful headaches and no pill could cure them or make them feel better. I had a horrible headache every single day in January. I also began to have intense hot flashes and could not sleep at all. I was physically exhausted and miserable because I was in so much pain. I knew my problem was hormonal and so I did what every American does with a computer, I googled it.
